Why? Mariame Kaba is the person I want to learn from about abolition and transformative justice. Here’s an interview and another one.
November (19): Octavia's Brood
Why? Octavia Butler's writing is glorious; these stories are inspired by it. Good idea to read some of her stuff first...I recommend Kindred or Parable of the Sower or honestly anything.
December (17): Black Lives Matter at School
Why? "Black Lives Matter at School succinctly generalizes lessons from successful challenges to institutional racism that have been won through the Black Lives Matter at School movement." I need these examples, maybe you do too?
January (21): The Night Watchman
Why? Louise Erdrich is a writer I've meant to read for years, and what I know of this book makes it sound like medicine for my evolving relationship with language. Here's a review.
February (18): Revolutionary Mothering
Why? Alexis Pauline Gumbs was one of the editors, and my friend Heidi named her amazing org (Motherful) after this book. All welcome, whatever your relationship to mothers and mothering.
March (18): fiction, TBD!
We will probably decide this together via Signal--possibly with a couple of circles reading different books. The Low Low Woods? An Unkindness of Ghosts? Deacon King Kong?
